Kells

Kells

Kells is by far the most popular Irish Pub in town, but for that reason it is not the best. If your looking for a cover charge, tons of people, long lines, and expensive drinks Kells is your place. If your used to these little annoyances and pick bars for the quality of the crowd, Kells is a pretty good choice. A mix between older recently divorced hip folks and young kids taking a break from the club action provides a fun atmosphere to enjoy some quality Irish music. A look at the ceiling reveals a bunch of bills dangling mysteriously. Upon asking a waitress for there secret to this witchcraft, she sarcastically claimed, "Irish Magic." Ha, I'll give her some Irish Magic of my own. My quest for the truth didn't stop with this waitress, I soon realized the little secret. The dollar bill is tightly wrapped with two quarters, and a push pin. Correctly twisted and thown with enough strength, the pin lodges into the wood ceiling, and a poor customer is out a buck-fifty. "Irish Magic" or "Irish Robbery"? Another little secret that is important to remember is the second bar. Located in the room adjacent to where the big fancy bar is, a little jewel of a bar offers a few taps (including Guinness!!), and I've never seen a line. Word on the street is that Kells is the first bar in Portland to become smoke free. Kind of a dissapointment, I'm not a smoker myself, but it sure seems like every hot slutty chick I see is. Oh well, I can just go down the street to Bar71 to get my fix. Kells has a few good points, but if your looking for a true Irish bar try: Biddy McGraws or Fado's.
